We’ll meet in the church kitchen and walk to the downtown farmers market to get our supplies. Then we’ll head back to the church and cook up some tasty spring cuisine. As we continued our Deuteronomy sermon series at Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Charleston, SC, we began Chapter 33 this past Sunday, May 7 examining the last words of Moses. Though his last words to the Hebrew people could have been bitter, Moses chose to bless the tribes of Israel because the heart of Moses’ God is to bless his people. It’s “blessing distribution time” for the Hebrew people now, and the tribe of Reuben (the firstborn son of Jacob) receives their blessing first. Do not be fooled by the brevity of this blessing: It highlights in a mighty way God’s grace and our assured future. Listen to the whole sermon here.
At Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Charleston, SC, during the month of May, the Session will accept elder nominations. Currently our Session comprises Craig Bailey, Kurt Brewer, Chris Yates Jarvis, and Tony Paladino. Here’s what’s needed from our congregation:
- As you’re thinking of men to nominate for serving in this capacity, please review these Scriptural qualifications from I Timothy 3: 1-7, where “overseer” is another name for elder: The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God’s church? He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil.
- As you’re identifying nominees, please talk with the nominee first to see if he’s willing to serve. Then put forth your nominees in writing by using this form or by handing a list to a current elder.
- As we’re accepting nominations, please be praying for nominees, the current Session, our nomination period, and subsequent training and election.

Last Sunday, April 30 we at Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Charleston, SC, enjoyed a special joint worship service with our neighbors around the corner at St. John’s Reformed Episcopal Church. Back in January, we hosted their congregation for a joint service, and last month they hosted us. We feasted in their beautiful courtyard behind their sanctuary after the worship service. How wonderful it was to worship across cultures, races, and denominations!
