Since the end of May, Redeemer has been the church family for these 11 Cru students who spent their summer serving the Charleston community. We said goodbye on Sunday, and we heard one student share of her life-changing experience working at a local McDonald’s, as the incarnation of Christ became more real and vibrant to her through working and sharing life outside her comfort zone. We’ve enjoyed the energy and passion of these young students in our children’s ministry this summer and the opportunity to host these students on Sunday afternoons for lunch. Pray for these Cru students as they travel back to their homes and colleges this week.
Join us for worship this Sunday, June 1. We’ll start the morning with a Cru Welcome Breakfast at 9:15 am when we’ll meet and fellowship with our summer Cru students. Then we’ll hear Pastor Craig’s message from Deuteronomy 9, so pick up your walking stick as we continue in Deuteronomy. Listen to previous sermons in the Deuteronomy series on our sermons page.
Here’s our electronic bulletin for Sunday that’s easily viewed on any tablet. Use the song lyrics and sermon passage to help prepare yourselves and your families for worship. You’ll also find a schedule for who’s serving in our various nurseries, a list of how to get involved in current ministry opportunities, and other details about our worship service and church life.
To welcome the Cru summer project students who will be pouring into Charleston over the next week, we’re hosting a welcome breakfast on Sunday, June 1 during the Christian-Ed. hour beginning at 9:15 am. Read more here about our past summers with Cru students. Bring your best breakfast foods–casseroles, muffins, yogurt, fruit, etc., and join us for breakfast as we welcome the Cru students.
We’ll use the Christian-Ed. hour to greet the students, fellowship over breakfast, and introduce them to our study of Romans that we’ll continue this summer.
If you’ve signed up to host Cru students on Sunday afternoons for their time in Charleston, then the welcome breakfast will be a perfect place to meet your students. Contact Kurt Brewer if you’d like to host students.
Redeemer has the opportunity and privilege again this summer to host Cru summer project students for eight weeks. College students from all over the country will pour into Charleston: They’ll work menial jobs, deeply study God’s Word together, live in a local hotel, do outreach on the beach, minister to our communities, and much more.
That’s where Redeemer comes in! We get to be these students’ church family, as they’re far from their homes, families, and colleges.
Redeemer’s Morgan Brewer is directing this year’s summer project in Charleston, and she’s excited that Redeemer will be a host church again:
As I’ve been reviewing applicants for this summer, I’ve been even MORE thankful that we host these students as I’ve heard their family backgrounds. So many of our students became believers while in college and have not seen or experienced what a godly, Christian family environment is like. What a ministry opportunity we have through hosting these students!
Beginning in June we’ll enjoy the Cru students’ joyful addition to our worship service and church body, and we’ll give folks in our church the opportunity to adopt a student or two for the few weeks that they’re here. We ask host families to invite their adopted students for Sunday lunch, offer a relaxing spot to crash for the afternoon, and give them a place to do laundry. Contact Kurt Brewer if you’re interested in hosting students or helping with the welcome luncheon on their first Sunday (June 1) at Redeemer.
Here’s what former students are saying about their time at Redeemer:
My host family was THE BEST! They were so gracious and welcoming! it meant so much to me that they wanted to get to know us and invest in our lives in any way possible! I’m looking forward to seeing them this summer. 🙂 –Catherine Verga
I can’t say enough good things about the host family/’adoption’ program –it was such an incredible and joyful part of my summer project experience! I talk about you guys all the time whenever I’m remembering back on last summer. Getting to know you and your family helped me to feel so much more connected to Redeemer and the city of Charleston, and of course the delicious meal every Sunday was wonderful! I definitely recommend it to every single one of the Cru students!! –Cassady Schulte
