Back in December 2016, Leslie Paladino approached the women of the three West Ashley community groups about starting a monthly book club. “It’s been a discipleship-oriented book club–focusing on spiritual transformation,” Leslie said. After lots of interest from the women in those community groups, Leslie presented three different book options, and the group voted for David Benner’s The Gift of Being Yourself: The Sacred Call to Self-Discovery (Spiritual Journey).
In January they began meeting together monthly for a shared meal and book discussion. “The book has really been great for discussion and to challenge us deeper in our walks with the Lord,” Leslie said. “It has been really wonderful to have this mixture of women to grow with!”
Caroline McGill attended the book club, too. “Our conversations have flowed freely over dinner, with kiddos put to bed or watched over at their homes by their daddies. We’ve enjoyed learning more about ourselves and each other and encouraging one another to be honest and open about our relationships within our families and with the Lord. I have personally been challenged in my overwhelming sense of independence, and have savored much of the wisdom written in the pages of the book as well as spoken over me and around the room during our discussions.”
Leslie has coordinated the schedule and food for the book club, along with cooking many of the meals. The book club hostess rotated most months to help share the load, and they’ll finish up their current book this month. Their book club has helped “provide cross-fellowship and discipleship opportunities for all,” Leslie said. The women of West Ashley are excited to read another book together in the future! Caroline said, “It has been a wonderful way of getting together with ladies who may or may not be part of the same community groups in West Ashley.”
