The Joy Set Before Him | Sermon, June 23

Redeemer Presbyterian Church, Charleston, SC

At Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Charleston, SC, on Sunday, June 23, we had Rev. Michael Walters from our sister church in West Ashley preach for us from Ephesians 5:25-33. He focused on the inextricable link between Christ and the church.

Below is a helpful outline as you listen online.

I. No Higher Price (An Costly Union) (25)

II. No One Closer (The Closest union) (25, 30, 31)
a. We are Christ’s fullness (1:23)

This is the highest honor of the church, that, until he is united to us, the Son of God recons himself in some measure imperfect. What consolation it is for us to learn that, not until we are in his presence, does he possess all his parts, or does he wish to be regarded as complete.

John Calvin

as a bridegroom he is incomplete without his bride; as a vine he cannot be thought of without the branches; as a shepherd he is not seen without his sheep; and so also as head he finds his full expression in his body, the church.

b. We are identified with Christ and he with us (28-31)
II Corinthians 5:21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

c. We are irreversibly joined together with him (30, 31)

III. None More Delightful (Union of supreme delight) (25, 27, 31)

a. He delights in you more than all heavenly creatures

b. He delights in you more than in all earthly creatures.

c. He expresses this supreme delight by caring for his church.

  1. Is this love mutual?
  2. Love your bride as Christ loves his
  3. Love the Bride of Christ
